Dominik Schiener didn’t grow up in the hustle and bustle of Silicon Valley, or in a startup office filled with tech buzzwords and cold coffee. Instead, he was born and raised in a region called South Tyrol, Northern Italy—a place better known for its mountains than blockchain.
However, it was from this place far from the center of innovation that a young man emerged who would later become known as one of the important figures in the crypto industry, especially through his role as the co-founder of the IOTA Foundation.
His journey into the world of crypto began around 2012, when Bitcoin was still considered experimental by many. Dominik, who was still a teenager at the time, felt that there was something interesting about the idea of a digital currency that was not controlled by governments or banks.
In 2013, he became active in the crypto community and even tried his luck by creating a crypto-to-fiat exchange service. He moved to Switzerland to realize the idea, but the results were not as he had hoped.
On the other hand, the bitter experience did not discourage him. In fact, it was there that he learned—that building something new takes more than just a good idea.
It takes mental toughness, the ability to read the direction, and a lot of courage to go against the grain. Many young people would have backed down after experiencing financial failure that early on. But not Dominik.
How Dominik Schiener Built a Feeless Future With IOTA
In 2015, Dominik met with three other people: David Sønstebø, Sergey Ivancheglo, and Serguei Popov. Together with them, he co-founded IOTA. Unlike most crypto projects that rely on blockchain, IOTA uses an alternative technology called Tangle, a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) structure that allows transactions to be carried out without any fees at all.
For the layperson, the idea of digital transactions without fees may sound like a dream. However, Dominik and his team believe that this is the key to making crypto systems widely used, especially for the Internet of Things (IoT)—a world where machines can “talk” to each other and transact automatically.
Imagine, for example, electric cars that pay for parking or charging themselves without human intervention. That’s where Dominik’s dream comes into play.
From Centralized Doubts to a Decentralized Future
Over time, many other crypto projects have come and gone. Some have risen to fame quickly, then disappeared without a trace. But IOTA has persevered, albeit with its own challenges. One of the biggest criticisms of IOTA is the existence of a “Coordinator,” a centralized system that is considered to be at odds with the spirit of decentralization.
Dominik has not shied away from this issue. In fact, he is leading the development of IOTA 2.0, a new version that will remove the Coordinator system and replace it with a more open validation model.
However, it’s not just the technical aspects that are his focus. Recently, he has been pushing for IOTA to become a home for the tokenization of real-world assets. From trade finance to logistics to supply chains—Dominik believes that the crypto world should be able to address concrete needs, not just be a tool for speculation.
Turning Community Into Co-Creators, Not Just Followers
Many crypto figures are eloquent about the future’s potential, but not many are willing to actually get involved in making it happen. Dominik is different.
He launched the IOTA Business Innovation Program, which provides up to €100,000 in funding for each new project built on IOTA. His goal is clear: to open the door as wide as possible for developers, researchers, and industry players so they can create real solutions, not just beautiful whitepapers.
Furthermore, he actively engages with his community, both through social media and AMA (Ask Me Anything) sessions. He doesn’t sell a dream, but invites people to join him in building it—slowly, one technological brick at a time.
From the Italian Alps to the Frontlines of Crypto
Dominik Schiener’s story is not just about technology or crypto. It’s about someone who wasn’t afraid to make mistakes, but also didn’t sit idly by when they happened. He didn’t come from what is usually called a “center of innovation,” but it was from there that a dreamer emerged who wanted to create a new, more efficient and equal financial system.
