The frontrunner in the race to become the Mayor of New York has vowed to make the Big Apple “the center” of Bitcoin (BTC) within the space of a year if he is elected.
In a speech to supporters yesterday, the leading candidate, Eric Adams, said,
“I’m going to promise you in one year, you’re going to see a different city. We’re going to bring businesses here. We’re going to become the center of life science, the center of cybersecurity, the center of self-driving cars and drones, the center of bitcoins, the center of all the technology.”
And in a side-swipe at the pro-crypto Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, he added,
“Miami, you had your run. We’re bringing our businesses back.”
Reuters reported that the outcome of the Democratic Party primaries – held on Tuesday this week – “likely won’t be known for weeks.” However, the signs for the crypto-bullish candidate Eric Adams already look promising. With 90% of in-person votes counted, Adams was the top choice on 31% of ballots. A winner is expected to be declared in mid-July after absentee ballots are counted.
Adams is widely expected to win the ensuing mayoral election in early November, where the Democratic nominee will go head-to-head with the Republican pick, the Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa, who won a primary vote earlier this week.
But New York has not voted in a Republican mayor since Michael Bloomberg in 2005 and that is unlikely to change in November. Oddschecker data shows that most bookmakers are not giving other candidates – Sliwa included – much of chance against Adams – they are offering odds of 1-12 and 1-20, while Sliwa is out at 28-1. Other leading Democrat candidates are out at 7-1 and above.
Suarez has not yet responded to Adams’ barb. But the Miami Mayor is no shrinking violet. And given the large preponderance of very vocal, very bullish crypto advocates currently in office in the United States, always looking to outdo one another on social media platforms – more eyebrow-raising pro-crypto proclamations of this sort are likely to follow.
