- Coinbase CEO has antagonized the position of Elon Musk over the halt of ChatGPT development.
- ChatGPT has come under criticism in recent times including from UNESCO.
There is a subtle antagonism among some of the biggest tech leaders in the United States including Tesla and Twitter CEO, Elon Musk and Coinbase co-founder and CEO Brain Armstrong over the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications like ChatGPT.
Recall that Elon Musk joined more than 1,600 other tech leaders to sign an Open Letter calling for the implementation of a 6-month moratorium on the development of advanced AI solutions. Responding to this, Brian Armstrong said he is not a part of that call, highlighting how he believes such a move will generally stiffen innovation.
“Count me among the people who think this is a bad idea,” Brian Armstrong wrote in a recent tweet. “There are no ‘experts’ to adjudicate this issue, and many disparate actors will never agree. Committees and bureaucracy won’t solve anything.”
Armstrong is an advocate of new tech and considering the resistance that the crypto ecosystem is still experiencing after more than a decade since its emergence, he has become more proactive in supporting AI. Armstrong is not just a proponent of AI, he is also a user of the ChatGPT application that was developed by OpenAI.
Coinbase use the tool to review securities tokens in the most recent proactive move by the Armstrong-led exchange to get things right with American regulators. Considering the good aspects of the ChatGPT, Armstrong said the positive aspect of the tech far outweighs the bad.
“As with many technologies, there are dangers, but we should keep marching forward with progress because the good outweighs the bad. The marketplace of ideas leads to better outcomes than central planning,” he said, adding, “Don’t ever let fear stop progress, and be wary of anyone trying to capture control in some central authority.”
Many people have called out OpenAI for its product which some belief gives inaccurate responses to some queries that are considered very important including political and social calls.
Intensifying Scrutiny of ChatGPT and AI
The emergence of OpenAI’s ChatGPT took the world by storm as it recorded more than 100 million users within the first few months of its release. Just a few weeks ago, the GPT-4 version was launched to showcase an even more advanced capability.
In all, the tendency for ChatGPT to take people’s jobs and cause social inequality has drawn deep concerns from international organizations United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

UNESCO has called for the development of a global framework for AI systems as the organization looks to reduce the potential frailty in the industry. Besides UNESCO, the Center for AI and Digital Policy has also filed a formal complaint against OpenAI with the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for the violation of Section Five of the FTC Act.
With the criticisms, it will not be surprising if we see a halt in the progress of ChatGPT and its potential influence in the crypto industry.
