As shared by Salima, a technology enthusiast, the University of Strathclyde’s new study explores how IOTA smart contracts can be paired with Digital Twins to automate processes like concrete curing, a task that’s surprisingly complex. Concrete requires very specific environmental conditions, including temperature, timing, and humidity, all of which play a crucial role in determining the strength and durability of the final product.
At the EG‑ICE 2025 conference this month, attendees will get a firsthand look at how IOTA smart contracts are being paired with Digital Twin technology to manage real-world industrial tasks, like concrete curing, with precision and automation.

A Digital Twin is like a digital replica of something in the real world, whether it’s a machine, a building process, or a system. It mirrors what’s happening in real time using live data, so you can monitor, test, and fine-tune performance without ever laying a finger on the actual thing. In this case, it’s being used to manage the curing of concrete.
Now, that might not sound thrilling, but it’s a critical process; tiny changes in temperature or timing can make a big difference in the strength and durability of the final structure. Normally, it would take constant monitoring and manual adjustments, but with this kind of setup, the whole thing can run automatically.
What if it didn’t? With IOTA in the mix, the whole process becomes smarter and more hands-off. The sensors placed inside the concrete track factor in such as temperature and elapsed time. That data goes straight to a digital twin.
Once the system sees that the concrete has hit the right conditions, like holding a certain temperature long enough, a smart contract on IOTA’s network automatically takes over.
It can turn off the heaters or move the process to the next stage, all on its own. No guesswork, just smooth, real-time automation that cuts down on errors, saves time, and removes the need for constant human oversight.
IOTA’s Spotlight
It looks like IOTA is finally getting some well-deserved academic recognition. According to a recent report by Crypto News Flash, IOTA was highlighted in a major academic study on digital identity published in 2025.
The study, titled “Decentralization Trends in Identity Management: From Federated to Self-Sovereign Identity Management Systems,” was conducted by researchers at the University of Oslo in Norway.
It took note of three digital identity solutions: eIDAS, Hyperledger, and IOTA Identity. Out of the solutions studied, IOTA stood out for cutting out the middlemen, putting users fully in control of their own identities, and embracing the idea of self-sovereign identity.
